Getting started
- Prop your device up facing you at roughly arm's length — on your desk while you work, study, or scroll.
- Allow camera access when asked. Detection runs entirely on your device; nothing is recorded or uploaded.
- Start monitoring. When your hand drifts toward your face or hair, you'll get a gentle buzz, a sound, and an on-screen flash.
- Use the Test button to feel what an alert is like before you rely on it.
Frequently asked questions
Detection seems too sensitive (or not sensitive enough).
Adjust the sensitivity slider in settings — it controls how close is "too close." The cooldown setting controls how often you can be alerted, so you're nudged rather than nagged.
Does the app work with the screen off or in the background?
No. Monitoring needs the app open with the screen on, with your face and hands visible to the front camera. This is an OS-level limitation of camera access and also keeps the privacy story simple.
Is my camera footage stored or uploaded anywhere?
Never. Frames are analyzed in real time on your device and immediately discarded. The apps contain no networking code, no analytics, and no accounts. See the privacy policy for full details.
The lighting in my room seems to affect detection.
Detection works best with your face evenly lit and the camera at eye level. Strong backlight (e.g., a window behind you) can reduce accuracy.
How do I reset my statistics?
Open the statistics screen and use the reset option. Statistics are stored only on your device, so deleting the app also deletes them.
Is this a medical device?
No. Pull-Free and FaceFence are awareness tools to help you notice unconscious habits. They are not a diagnosis, treatment, or substitute for professional care. If a BFRB is significantly affecting your life, please consider reaching out to a clinician — the TLC Foundation for BFRBs is a good place to start.
